Environmental Overview

Environmental concerns are a high priority in all phases of the resettlement of Rongelap.  Some of the policies adopted for Rongelap Atoll include:

bullet Preserving the reef and marine life of the reef system to insure a ready source of sea life for the Rongelap residents
bullet Protecting the reef and marine life of the reef system to increase and hold its attraction as a tourist destination
bullet Supporting economic development through industries such as aquaculture which depends on healthy and abundant reef systems.
bullet Basing the choice of materials on sound economic decisions rather than convenience.

Construction of buildings on Rongelap Atoll meet internationally accepted standards in the use of appropriate materials, safety and durability. All are expected to have a minimum lifespan of 30 years.  Special consideration in building design is given to environmental problems such as the corrosive action of salts and stress of high winds.

Where possible, the natural properties of shade and ventilation are used to cool buildings and solar systems are used to heat water

Vegetation is used to repair and enhance the appearance of constructions sites, quarry areas, and areas where landfill has been taken.  Where possible, food and medicinal plants are used to rehabilitate disturbed areas.

The use of quarry materials is minimized. When necessary, materials are obtained from limited areas of dead reef on the ocean side of the atoll. Sand is dredged only from the lagoon in the areas immediately around the medium draft dock.

Concrete blocks are formulated from imported sand and aggregate.
