The Rongelap Atoll
is one of 29 atolls and 5 islands in the central Pacific
region that make up the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). The
land area of Rongelap Atoll consists of 61 islets with a combined
area of approximately 3 square miles. The lagoon covers 388 square
miles.
Located half-way between Hawaii and
Australia the Marshall Islands consist of 2 parallel chains of
atolls that cover an area about the size of California. They extend
approximately 1000 km (620 mi) north to south. Rongelap is located
in the northern portion of the western chain (called Ralik, the
Marshallese name for sunset). The eastern chain is called Rakak,
meaning sunrise. |
